About Sonrise Westside
Our Purpose is to win and strengthen the hearts and minds of the Westside of Los Angeles for Jesus Christ.
Sonrise Westside Community Church was founded on September 29, 2002. Before that, lead pastor Darrin Mariott was an assistant pastor at Metro church, a Calvary Chapel in Santa Monica. We first met on Sunday evenings at the Courtyard by Marriott in Marina del Rey until God provided us with a community partnership and Sunday morning home. On December 1, 2002, we held our first Sunday morning worship service at our current facility, the Boys and Girls Club of Venice.
Sonrise is an independent, nondenominational church. We are administratively governed by a board of directors that includes our lead pastor, Darrin Mariott. In addition to Darrin, Elders Tom Hooper and Keith Smith provide spiritual oversight for the church and share in the spiritual care of all who attend. The Word of God is our highest authority, and we prayerfully aspire to biblical models of leadership at every level.
Our vision can be summarized in what we call "The Four E's":
- EXALT Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior -- believing that we exist to glorify God, we desire to worship Jesus in acknowledgement of who He is and what He has done. We truly love Jesus and desire to see His values lived out in every facet of our lives
- ENCOURAGE the Community -- believing that the Church exists in part to meet physical needs as well as spiritual, we commit to partnerships with local ministries and nonprofit organizations in their outreach efforts. We are also commited to social justice, desiring to see God's redemptive compassion infiltrate every sphere of our community
- EDUCATE Christians -- believing that the Church has been weakened and lost cultural impact by de-emphasizing the study of scripture, we strive to strengthen Christian minds, guiding believers to a better understanding of the Bible and our culture and preparing them to share and defend their faith with patience and compassion
- EXPAND the Kingdom -- believing in the importance of Jesus' message, we seek opportunities to share the love of Christ and to minister to a hurting world
